Isaiah 47:1 meaning and explanation

“Go down and sit in the dust, O Virgin Daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground without a throne, O Daughter of Chaldea! For you will no longer be called tender or delicate.

Isaiah 47:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The speaker is the LORD through Isaiah, addressing Babylon as a city personified as a woman. In this chapter Babylon has already conquered Judah and boasts of lasting security, so the command to sit in the dust is a picture of total humiliation, the posture of a captive or mourner.
