Isaiah 47:6 meaning and explanation

I was angry with My people; I profaned My heritage, and I placed them under your control. You showed them no mercy; even on the elderly you laid a most heavy yoke.

Isaiah 47:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In this verse the LORD speaks through Isaiah about Babylon, the empire that conquered Judah and took its people into exile. God says the exile was his own doing: his anger at his people's covenant unfaithfulness led him to hand them over, and "profaned My heritage" means he let his treasured people be treated as common spoil.
