Isaiah 49:1 meaning and explanation

Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples: The LORD called Me from the womb; from the body of My mother He named Me.

Isaiah 49:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

This verse opens the second Servant Song, in which an unnamed speaker addresses the coastlands and distant peoples rather than Israel alone. The Servant looks back on a calling that began before birth: the LORD summoned him from the womb and named him there, language that echoes the call of prophets like Jeremiah and the servant role given to Israel.
