Isaiah 51:3 meaning and explanation

For the LORD will comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; He will make her wilderness like Eden and her desert like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and melodious song.

Isaiah 51:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah is speaking to a people who have seen Zion, Jerusalem, left in ruins, and he grounds their hope in God's own promise to comfort. The word for comfort here carries the sense of consolation and relief, the same comfort God's people later sing about in chapter 40.
