Isaiah 59:9 meaning and explanation

Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We hope for light, but there is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in gloom.

Isaiah 59:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In this chapter the prophet addresses Judah, a people mired in injustice, and here the voice shifts to communal confession. The "therefore" reaches back to the crooked paths of verses 7 and 8: because the nation turned aside, justice stays far off and righteousness never arrives.
