Shall I bring a baby to the point of birth and not deliver it?” says the LORD. “Or will I who deliver close the womb?” says your God.

Near the end of Isaiah, God answers a discouraged people who have returned from exile to rebuild ruined Jerusalem. Using the image of childbirth, he asks whether he would begin a birth and then refuse to complete it.
