Ahaz, king of Judah, is cornered: Aram and Ephraim have plotted to replace him, and Isaiah has just invited him to ask the LORD for any sign he wishes. His reply sounds pious, echoing Deuteronomy 6:16, but the prophet treats it as refusal, not humility.
