Isaiah 8:7 meaning and explanation

the Lord will surely bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the Euphrates— the king of Assyria and all his pomp. It will overflow its channels and overrun its banks.

Isaiah 8:7, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD speaks through Isaiah to Judah during the Assyrian crisis of the eighth century BC. Verses 6 and 7 form one sentence: because the people rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah, a quiet image of God's modest provision, and rejoiced in Rezin and Pekah instead, the Lord will bring something far greater than that alliance, the Euphrates in flood, named plainly as the king of Assyria and all his pomp.
