James 2:18 meaning and explanation

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.

James 2:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

James is answering an imagined objector who tries to separate faith from deeds, as though one person could have faith and another deeds. His reply is a challenge: faith that never shows itself in action cannot be displayed at all, while genuine faith becomes visible through what a person does.
