Jeremiah 11:19 meaning and explanation

For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter; I did not know that they had plotted against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”

Jeremiah 11:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah is speaking, and the plot against him comes from his own hometown of Anathoth, whose men had threatened to kill him if he kept prophesying (verses 21 to 23). He pictures himself as a gentle lamb, a tame animal unaware it is being led to slaughter, and he learned of the scheme only because the LORD revealed it (verse 18).
