Jeremiah 12:1 meaning and explanation

Righteous are You, O LORD, when I plead before You. Yet about Your judgments I wish to contend with You: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease?

Jeremiah 12:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah speaks to God as a prophet who has preached judgment to Judah while the wicked around him seem to thrive. He first affirms that God is righteous, then dares to bring a complaint, using the Hebrew verb yariv, to contend or bring a legal case, which frames his question as a formal dispute rather than mere grumbling.
