Jeremiah 13:14 meaning and explanation

I will smash them against one another, fathers and sons alike, declares the LORD. I will allow no mercy or pity or compassion to keep Me from destroying them.’”

Jeremiah 13:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD is speaking through Jeremiah to the people of Judah and Jerusalem, who have refused his words and followed other gods (verses 9 to 10). The image of smashing comes from the wineskin saying just before it: the jars will be filled with drunkenness, and the resulting collapse will be total, reaching kings, priests, prophets and ordinary people alike.
