Jeremiah 2:25 meaning and explanation

You should have kept your feet from going bare and your throat from being thirsty. But you said, ‘It is hopeless! For I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.’

Jeremiah 2:25, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD is speaking through Jeremiah to Judah, and verse 25 closes a passage accusing the people of chasing foreign gods like an animal in heat. The bare feet and thirsty throat picture the exhaustion of running after idols, and possibly the hardship of seeking help from Egypt or Assyria instead of trusting God.
