Jeremiah 21:9 meaning and explanation

Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who besiege you will live; he will retain his life like a spoil of war.

Jeremiah 21:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah is speaking to the people of Jerusalem during the Babylonian siege, answering King Zedekiah's request for a hopeful oracle. Instead of rescue, God sets two paths before the city: remain and die by sword, famine and plague, or go out and surrender to the Chaldeans and live.
