Jeremiah 3:23 meaning and explanation

Surely deception comes from the hills, and commotion from the mountains. Surely the salvation of Israel is in the LORD our God.

Jeremiah 3:23, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words are Israel's response to God's call to return in verse 22. Speaking as a repentant people, they confess that the noisy worship on the hills and mountains, the shrines where they had sought help from other gods, was deception (the Hebrew word suggests falsehood or what disappoints).
