Jeremiah 31:19 meaning and explanation
After I returned, I repented; and after I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
Jeremiah 31:19, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Jeremiah 31 pictures Israel's return from exile, and in verse 19 the northern tribe of Ephraim speaks in the first person, voicing the repentance God has just heard. The Lord quotes Ephraim's own words: after being disciplined like an untrained calf and then restored, Ephraim repents, strikes the thigh as a gesture of grief, and feels shame over the disgrace of its youth, meaning the idolatry of earlier generations.
