Jeremiah 34:14 meaning and explanation

Every seventh year, each of you must free his Hebrew brother who has sold himself to you. He may serve you six years, but then you must let him go free. But your fathers did not listen or incline their ear.

Jeremiah 34:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD speaks through Jeremiah, reminding Jerusalem of the covenant law given at Sinai: a Hebrew who sold himself into service was to be released in the seventh year. This was not mere charity but a command rooted in Israel's own rescue from Egypt, where God freed a people who had been slaves.
