Jeremiah 41:5 meaning and explanation
eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their garments, and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, carrying grain offerings and frankincense for the house of the LORD.
Jeremiah 41:5, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
These eighty men came from the former northern kingdom, from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, on their way to worship at the ruined temple in Jerusalem. Their shaved beards, torn garments and self-inflicted cuts were customary signs of mourning, and they carried grain offerings and frankincense because the temple had no altar for animal sacrifice after its destruction.
