Jeremiah 49:5 falls within the oracle against Ammon, spoken by the prophet in Judah during the late seventh or early sixth century BC. The Ammonites, Israel's eastern neighbors, had taken possession of Israelite territory and trusted in their fruitful valleys and wealth (verses 1 and 4).
