Jeremiah 5:31 meaning and explanation

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority. My people love it so, but what will you do in the end?

Jeremiah 5:31, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah 5 is a covenant lawsuit in which the LORD, speaking through the prophet, indicts Jerusalem for injustice, idolatry and false security. Verse 31 closes the chapter by naming the leaders who made this possible: prophets who spoke lies in God's name, and priests who used their office to rule by their own authority rather than God's.
