Jeremiah 51:2 meaning and explanation

I will send strangers to Babylon to winnow her and empty her land; for they will come against her from every side in her day of disaster.

Jeremiah 51:2, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD is speaking through Jeremiah in a long oracle against Babylon, the empire that destroyed Jerusalem and its temple. Babylon is pictured as grain on a threshing floor: winnowing is the tossing of grain so the wind carries away the chaff, and here the "strangers" are foreign armies, the Medes and their allies, who will scatter Babylon's people and leave the land empty.
