Jeremiah 7:19 meaning and explanation

But am I the One they are provoking? declares the LORD. Is it not themselves they spite, to their own shame?

Jeremiah 7:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah has just described families in Judah making cakes and drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven, likely a Mesopotamian sky goddess, and the LORD asks whether such worship actually provokes Him or whether it harms the worshipers themselves. The Hebrew verb for "provoke" carries the sense of angering or vexing, and the second question answers the first: their idolatry is self-directed spite, bringing shame on their own heads.
