Eliphaz, the first of Job’s three friends, is answering Job’s complaint in this second round of speeches. His question is sarcasm: Job has spoken as though he alone understands God’s ways, so Eliphaz asks whether Job is the first human ever born or was brought forth before the hills, an image of primeval wisdom.
