Job 16:20 meaning and explanation

My friends are my scoffers as my eyes pour out tears to God.

Job 16:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Job is speaking, answering Eliphaz and the other friends who came to comfort him but have instead argued that his suffering must be deserved. In verse 20 he names the sting of that betrayal: the very men who should stand with him mock him, and the phrase can also be read as "my friends scoff at my tears." Yet in the same breath he turns from them toward God, pouring out his weeping in prayer.
