Joel 2:17 meaning and explanation

Let the priests who minister before the LORD weep between the portico and the altar, saying, “Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not make Your heritage a reproach, an object of scorn among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”

Joel 2:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The prophet Joel pictures a devastated Judah facing a locust plague that foreshadows the Day of the LORD. In verse 17 the LORD calls the priests, who alone served at the temple, to stand in the narrow space between the portico and the altar, the very threshold of the sanctuary, and weep aloud.
