John 1:23 meaning and explanation

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet: “I am a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

John 1:23, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

John the Baptist is answering priests and Levites sent from Jerusalem to ask who he is. He has already denied being the Christ, Elijah, or the Prophet, so he identifies himself by quoting Isaiah 40:3, where a voice in the wilderness prepares a road for the Lord's coming.
