John 11:17 meaning and explanation

When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb.

John 11:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus has deliberately waited two days after hearing Lazarus was sick, and by the time he arrives in Bethany, Lazarus has been in the tomb four days. In Jewish thought of the period, the fourth day was often taken as the point at which mourning became settled and hope of recovery had passed, which is why the crowd and Martha react as they do.
