Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue.

John has just quoted Isaiah on unbelief, and here he adds a quieter, sadder note. Many of the rulers and leaders in Jerusalem did believe in Jesus, yet they would not confess Him openly.
