Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

Explanation preview
Jesus has just washed his disciples' feet, a task normally done by a household servant, and he has told them they should do the same for one another. He now states a general principle: a servant does not outrank his master, and a messenger does not outrank the one who sent him.
