John 17:21 meaning and explanation

that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

John 17:21, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus prays in the upper room shortly before his arrest, and in verse 20 he widens the prayer beyond the disciples present to everyone who will believe through their message. The unity he asks for is modeled on the mutual indwelling of the Father and the Son, so believers are drawn into that shared life, not merely into agreement with each other.
