At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.

Explanation preview
Peter has followed Jesus into the high priest's courtyard, but he stays outside at the door until the other disciple, known to the high priest, brings him in. The servant girl keeping the door asks whether he is also one of this man's disciples, and Peter answers, "I am not." The question is casual, from a slave girl with no power to arrest him, yet Peter denies the relationship anyway.
