This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.

John has just reported the Jewish leaders telling Pilate, "We are not permitted to execute anyone." The verse explains that this fulfilled what Jesus had said about the kind of death he would die. In John 12:32-33 Jesus spoke of being "lifted up," which the Gospel applies to his crucifixion.
