John 19:23 meaning and explanation
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments into four parts, one for each soldier, with the tunic remaining. It was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
John 19:23, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
John narrates the crucifixion with restraint, and here he describes the soldiers carrying out what was customary for an execution squad: the condemned man's clothing belonged to them. Four soldiers each took a share, but the tunic, a single woven piece without seams, could not be split fairly, so they cast lots for it.
