John 19:32 meaning and explanation
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and those of the other.
John 19:32, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The soldiers are carrying out Pilate's order from verse 31 so the bodies would not remain on the cross during the High Sabbath. Breaking the legs was a Roman practice that hastened death by stopping a crucified person from pushing up to breathe.
