John 2:20 meaning and explanation
“This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?”
John 2:20, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The speakers are the Jewish authorities in Jerusalem, answering Jesus after he cleared the temple courts and they demanded a sign of his authority. They take his saying about destroying and raising the temple literally, as a claim about the building, and their figure of forty-six years fits the long construction and renovation of Herod's temple, still unfinished in Jesus' day.
