John 20:22, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
On the evening of the resurrection, the risen Jesus stands among his fearful disciples in a locked room and commissions them as the Father sent him. He then breathes on them and says, "Receive the Holy Spirit." The Greek word for "breathed" is emphysao, used elsewhere in the Greek Bible for God breathing life into Adam, so the gesture echoes creation and points to new life.
