After a night of fruitless fishing on the Sea of Tiberias, the risen Jesus stands on the shore at dawn, but the disciples in the boat do not recognize him. John does not explain why; distance, dim light, or their exhaustion may all play a part, and elsewhere in the resurrection accounts recognition often comes slowly.
