Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”

The disciples had gone into Sychar to buy food, leaving Jesus alone at Jacob's well, where a Samaritan woman came to draw water. When they return, they find him in conversation with her and are surprised, since Jewish teachers of that time generally did not hold public discussions with women, and Samaritans were viewed with suspicion.
