John 4:5 meaning and explanation

So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

John 4:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is travelling from Judea to Galilee, and John notes that the route took him through Samaria, a region Jews normally avoided. Sychar is near land Jacob gave to Joseph (Genesis 48:22; Joshua 24:32), so the setting carries ancestral memory.
