For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes.

Jesus is answering the charge that He made Himself equal with God (verses 17 to 18). In this speech He describes a unity of will and action with the Father: the Son does nothing on His own but does what He sees the Father doing.
