A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.
John 6:18, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The disciples are alone in a boat at night, rowing toward Capernaum after Jesus withdrew from the crowd. John notes the strong wind and the agitated sea to set the scene for what follows: Jesus comes to them walking on the water, and they are terrified until He says, “It is I; do not be afraid.” The Greek verb for “agitated,” diegeiretai, means stirred up or awakened.
