John 6:7 meaning and explanation

Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.”

John 6:7, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus has just asked Philip where bread could be bought for the crowd, and John notes that He asked to test him. Philip answers with arithmetic rather than faith: a denarius was a day's wage, so two hundred of them, roughly eight months of pay, would still not buy each person even a small piece.
