Explanation preview
The Pharisees are speaking to the temple officers they sent to arrest Jesus. The officers have returned empty-handed, stunned by how Jesus taught, and the Pharisees answer with scorn: "Have you also been deceived?" The question assumes that only the ignorant crowd could be taken in, and it prepares for their next line, that none of the rulers or Pharisees have believed.
