John has just described Jesus' brothers urging him to go to Judea and display his works publicly, and verse 5 gives the reason their advice fell flat: they did not believe in him. The Greek word for brothers (adelphoi) most naturally means siblings here, though Catholic and Orthodox readers often read it as close relatives or cousins, since they hold that Mary remained a virgin.
