The Pharisees, interrogating the man born blind a second time in John 9, answer his reasoned defense of Jesus with contempt. His argument, that no one could open blind eyes unless sent by God, exposes their claim to spiritual sight, so they invoke the old assumption that suffering proves sin, the very idea Jesus rejected in verse 3.
