At this, they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm.

Explanation preview
The sailors are pagan seamen caught in a storm they believe Jonah has caused. After casting lots and hearing his confession, they first row hard to reach land rather than throw him overboard, and they pray to the LORD not to hold them guilty of innocent blood.
