Jonah 1:5 meaning and explanation

The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

Jonah 1:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The sailors are pagan seamen caught in the storm God hurled on the sea because Jonah fled from his commission to Nineveh. Each man cries to his own deity, and they jettison cargo to save the ship, the ordinary response of ancient sailors in peril.
