Jonah 2:3 meaning and explanation

For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.

Jonah 2:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jonah prays from inside the fish, and in verse 3 he describes his descent into the sea as God's own action: "You cast me into the deep." The sailors threw him overboard in chapter 1, yet Jonah sees the hand of God behind it, accepting that the storm and the waters were not random but the outworking of God's pursuit of a fleeing prophet. The "deep" and the "heart of the seas" are images of chaos and death in Hebrew poetry, and the waves sweeping over him echo the psalms of lament.
