Then Jonah left the city and sat down east of it, where he made himself a shelter and sat in its shade to see what would happen to the city.

Jonah has just preached to Nineveh, and the city has turned from its evil, so God has spared it. Instead of rejoicing, Jonah is furious that mercy was shown to Israel's enemies.
