Joshua 10:11 meaning and explanation

As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.

Joshua 10:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Joshua has just marched all night from Gilgal to relieve Gibeon, and the Amorite coalition is fleeing down the descent from Beth-horon. The narrator credits the rout to the LORD, not to Israel's swords: the same God who promised in verse 8 that not one would stand now throws large hailstones from the sky, and the stones kill more than the soldiers do.
